Grading, Academic Year and Language of Instruction in Lithuania

Grading System

The secondary schools and higher education institutions in Lithuania use a 10-point grading scale. Grades 3 and below are given a status of “Fail”. Grades above 3, i.e. 10 to 4 are considered “Pass”.
  • Grade 10 indicates “Excellent” (Puikiai)
  • Grade 9.00- 9.99 indicates “Very Good” (Labai Gerai)
  • Grades 8.00 - 8.99 indicates “Good” (Gerai)
  • Grades 7.00 - 7.99 indicates “Highly satisfactory” (Pakankamai)
  • Grades 6.00 - 6.99 indicates “Satsifactory” (Patenkinamai)
  • Grades 5.00 - 5.99 indicates “Sufficient” (Silpnai)
  • Grades 4.00 - 4.99 indicates “Unsatisfactory” (Nepakankamai)
  • Grades 3.00 - 3.99 indicates “Poor” (Blogai)
  • Grades 2.00 - 2.99 indicates “Very poor” (Labai Blogai)
  • Grades 1.00 - 1.99 indicates “Completely Poor” (Visai Blogai)

European Credit Transfer System (ECTS)

Higher education in Lithuania is assessed as per the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).
  • Grade A in the Lithuanian higher education institutions is equivalent to US grade A and refers to "Excellent".
  • Grade B in the Lithuanian higher education institutions is equivalent to US grade B and signifies "Very good". 
  • Grade C in the Lithuanian higher education institutions is equivalent to US grade B and signifies "Good".
  • Grade D in the Lithuanian higher education institutions is equivalent to US grade C and signifies "Satisfactory".
  • Grade E in the Lithuanian higher education institutions is equivalent to US grade C and signifies "Sufficient".
  • Grade FX in the Lithuanian higher education institutions is equivalent to US grade F and both the grades indicate a "Failed" status.
  • Grade F in the Lithuanian higher education institutions is equivalent to US grade F and both the grades indicate a "Failed" status.

Language of Instruction

The language of instruction in Lithuania is Lithuanian.  Russian and Polish languages are also used as the medium of instruction in many general education schools in Lithuania.

Academic Year

In Lithuania, the academic year commences in September and concludes in mid-June. The academic year is split up into 2 semesters:
  • Spring semester: This semester commences in February
  • Autumn semester: This semester starts in August.
Each semester generally lasts for about 20 weeks. At the end of each semester, examinations are held. 
Holidays-
In between the semesters are the following breaks:
  • Autumn break: This break is of 1 week and begins in November. 
  • Christmas break: This break is of 2 weeks starting from 25th December until the start of January.
  • Easter break: This break is of 1 week around Easter.
  • Summer break: This break commences from early June to August 31
  • Additional break: This break is of 1 week in February end. Generally it takes place only in primary schools.
